John Cauley Memorial
College Scholarship

WHO IS JOHN CAULEY?
The John Cauley
Memorial College Scholarship has been established in the memory of John Cauley,
our co-founder, coach, and puzzle master. The
Scholarship is given in recognition of his dreams for and devotion to the
Monroeville Chess Club. It
is because of some of his visions that we have made significant strides and
achievements. The Scholarship is
given annually to the member who has brought many of John Cauley’s ideals to
reality.

Selection
Process
Each year a review of the membership is preformed to establish if there
are any qualified candidates for the Scholarship.
Each candidate is then notified that he/she has met the first nine
requirements and must submit an essay for final consideration.
Each year an adult committee, chaired by Delbert Tyler, Co-Founder and
Coach, is selected, consisting of 4 active adult parents of Monroeville Chess
Club members. Except for the
chairperson, a parent of any candidate cannot be on the committee.
The committee chooses the essay topics and sets a deadline for submitting
the essays. Once the essays are
submitted, they are forwarded to three essay judges selected by the committee
chairperson. The judges consist of
two Gateway School District teachers and Mrs. Lois Cauley.
The essays are submitted to the judges without names or any other
identifying marks. Judges are
provided with the candidate’s grade and are instructed to consider that
information when reviewing for grammar and structure.
The results of the judges’ scores are tabulated by the chairperson and
are presented to the committee. The
Scholarship is awarded annually at the Club’s award banquet held in June.

How Much is the Scholarship
The Scholarship Fund is small, but currently awards a $500 college
scholarship annually to a winning candidate.
Each scholarship recipient’s name is permanently inscribed on the
Club’s Scholarship Plaque, displayed in the Club’s trophy case.
Recipients must request their $500 award upon entering college by
submitting a Scholarship Request Form. The
recipient must attend a college to be eligible to receive the scholarship award.
How is the Scholarship Fund Supported
The Fund was initially started in
2000. After the death of John
Cauley, his brothers, sisters and other close relatives who understood his love
for the Club and chess, donated money. The
Club then decided to establish this Scholarship Fund in honor of John’s
contributions. The Fund is
presently only supported with proceeds from the annual John Cauley Memorial
Chess Championships, held each summer. The
funds are invested and are expected to yield an 8% return annually.
It is our intention to continue to raise money for the Scholarship Fund
so we can eventually increase the amount of our financial award.
If you are inspired by the many things that we do and would like to make
a tax deductible contribution, you can contact us or just mail your contribution to Monroeville
Chess Club – Scholarship Fund, 351 Shady Ridge Drive, Monroeville, PA 15146.
